Is General’s House in Nuwara Eliya Haunted?

In the cool hills of Nuwara Eliya, hidden behind thick mist and quiet trees, sits the beautiful General’s House. It looks peaceful, with its English-style design and old-world charm. These days, it’s used by Sri Lankan Members of Parliament as a holiday home. But locals say there’s more to this house than meets the eye.

A long time ago, during the British colonial period, a young English lady died in one of the rooms. No one knows how. Her body was found lying still, with eyes wide open. Since then, strange things have happened.

People say they hear soft crying at night. Footsteps in empty hallways. Cold air in rooms with no windows open. Sinks suddenly start running water—on their own, without anyone touching the tap. Some even say they’ve seen a woman in white standing in front of a mirror, staring at them. One guest walking through the garden felt someone brush past them—but when they turned to look, no one else saw anything.

A former guest said he once woke up to old music playing on its own. When he looked in the mirror, there was someone behind him. But when he turned around… no one was there.

So if you ever visit General’s House, enjoy the view. But at night, if you hear knocking… maybe don’t open the door.
